Starting an author newsletter is one of the first things I recommend to my clients. Why?
Readers are scattered across algorithms and platforms, but an email list belongs to you. For authors, it can be the single most reliable channel to announce releases, offer exclusive content, and build recurring revenue.
I believe the author newsletter to be one of the most important elements on the author journey. When done correctly it can be a huge source of reader connection. When done with haste it's a waste of yours and your subscribers time.
Here, I'll touch on a few basics to show the importance of the author newsletter, and how following a system and cadence is a great place to start.

The Basics: What makes an author newsletter work
As you embark on your author newsletter journey, keep these core elements in mind. Your newsletter is more than an announcement board, it's the foundation of your reader relationship. The right mix of consistency, value, and clear expectations will set you apart from authors who send sporadically or only to pitch.
Note: I'm not a lawyer — these are industry best practices. Always verify compliance requirements for your location and audience with qualified legal counsel.
You don't have to start from scratch
Every fiction author I've worked with started exactly at the beginning, knowing they should have a newsletter but not quite sure how to make it happen. Whether you need help setting up your system, crafting your reader magnet, or managing the ongoing sends, I'm here to bridge the gap between intention and execution.

From Story Updates to Sales: The Soft Sell
Fiction readers came for your stories, so let that lead the way. These soft sell techniques for authors will help you convert your newsletter readers into buyers:
The goal is simple: consistently make readers look forward to your emails so that when you do mention something to buy, it feels like a friend recommending a book, not an ad.
- Build anticipation: Share cover reveals, chapter teasers, or character spotlights across several issues before a launch. Many readers want a world or platform that they can invest their time and attention in. If you are passionate about the book you've written, this should be conveyed in your newsletter.
- Reader-first value: Give subscribers something only they get—a deleted scene, an epilogue, a short story set in your world. Signing up should feel more valuable than someone who freely scrolls your social feeds. This method encourages them to feel part of the pack and of your author world, perhaps even closer to the characters. This is also a great way to increase opens and click-throughs.
- Natural pivots: It's not as common for readers to engage with newsletters as much as they do on social. This can be a turn-off for authors who are addicted to the dopamine high of likes, follows, comments of social. Be steadfast. This is a different kind of platform. When newsletter subscribers do engage or reply, that's your opportunity to build connection and also an opening to mention books, boxed sets, or signed copies without it feeling forced.
- The space between: Between releases, keep readers warm with "what I'm working on" updates, trope discussions, or reading recommendations in your genre. Readers love learning more about characters and locations from your books. This quiet liminal space is often where most authors struggle. They don't feel they have anything worth saying and don't want to invest monthly effort to what feels like an echo chamber. But stay the course. It builds momentum and keeps you in a rhythm. If you want to stay relevant, you not only need to keep writing new books, you also have to stay in your readers' inboxes.
The goal is simple: consistently make readers look forward to your emails so that when you do mention something to buy, it feels like a friend recommending a book, not an ad.
What Fiction Authors Can Promote
Your newsletter isn't just for announcements, it's a storefront readers actually want to visit. These author newsletter content ideas can naturally be woven into your emails:
- Books & Series: New releases, pre-orders, box sets, limited editions
- Reader Extras: Bonus chapters, companion novellas, map/artwork downloads, playlists inspired by the story
- Signed Copies & Merch: Personalized bookplates, character art, bookmarks, stickers
- Crowdfunding & Pre-orders: Kickstarter campaigns, Patreon tiers for early access or bonus stories
- Events: Book signings, virtual release parties, author panels, workshops
